Full name: Marie Wolf (Wolf Marie) Year of birth and death: 1899 - 1976 Biography: Born into a wealthy family and whose father was a biomedical researcher in Imperial Germany, Marie Wolf was interested in treating others from a young age. In 1916, Marie joined the nursing force of imperial Germany. While serving in the army, she researched antibiotics to improve the survival rate of soldiers. After Germany surrendered, between 1918 and 1929, Marie graduated with a doctorate and studied abroad in the United States to learn and research medicines. In 1928, after reading Alexander Fleming's scientific report on a fungus that could resist Staphylococcus bacteria, she immediately wrote a letter to her father asking him to petition the Weimar Republic government to focus on research. But research about this fungus but was rejected by the government. In 1936, impressed by Marie's antibiotic research work, she was invited by Adolf Hitler to become commander of the military medical unit of the Dienstmädchen-SS force to facilitate the work. After receiving funding, Marie immediately returned to the country. During her time serving in the Dienstmädchen-SS, not a single soldier of the unit died from infection or bacterial-related diseases. In 1942, by contacting her friend Ernst Boris Chain, who was doing research in England, she obtained the first formula for the newly discovered antibiotic drug "penicillin". New medicine would play a huge role in for the medical system in Nazi Germany and later Germany. After the war, with her talent and extensive drug research projects, she was invited by the United States to return to continue researching drugs for them. Also in 1945, Marie Wolf was asked to receive the Nobel Prize in biomedicine, but she refused because she believed she "had no significant contributions to medical research". After 20 years working in America, Marie retired at the age of 66. She returned to West Germany and lived the rest of her life until her death in 1976.
