Ness's Mother (given the name Rachael in the novelization), is, well, Ness's mother. She supports Ness throughout his journey, heals Ness and co whenever they stop on by with good cooking (the player's chosen favorite food, the default being steak), and must be called on occasion to ward off the Homesickness status effect.
